What is a sock puppet 🧦

A sock puppet is used to create a false identity online. It is used to prevent your REAL identity from being traced.

So, my usual way of setting up a sock puppet is through DaisySMS. Mainly to get around phone verifications. Burner phones are an option, but they need a SIM card, and in some countries, getting one means you have to give your real ID. Therefore, it is hard to maintain anonymity when the account can be easily traced back to you.

Plus, nowadays, companies like Facebook are getting super strict. Even if you’re using something like ProtonMail, they’ll either flag your account or just won’t let you create one at all. That’s why I usually go with Gmail, just to keep things simple. However, when creating a new account with a new alias, Google still wants your phone number.

That’s where VoIP services can be pretty helpful. Free services like Google Voice, Burner, Hushed, TextFree, and Receive SMS Online offer temporary numbers, which can come in handy. But they can also be a bit hit or miss. A lot of the numbers are reused, so sometimes when you try to sign up for something, it doesn't work because someone else has already used that number.

Hence, DaisySMS has become one of my favorite ways to set up a sock puppet account. It’s cheap, and the best part is that it only charges you when a verification code is received. If no code comes through, you can simply change the number at no extra cost. Just note it only supports U.S. numbers, not international ones.

Alright, enough of my rambling. In the future, I’ll also be looking for more services like DaisySMS and sharing my reviews on them. But for now, let me show you DaisySMS.😉

SHOWTIME 🎉

  1. I've created a sock puppet account on Gmail and reached the phone verification step. Now I want to show you two different outcomes. One where I use a free number and one where I use DaisySMS.

  1. Free number

As you can see from the picture below, there was an alert.

  1. Using daisySMS

The number from DaisySMS.

  1. Get the verification code

  1. Enter the verification code and tada, you are done! 👏

That’s it, folks! I hope you enjoyed today’s blog on DaisySMS. It’s not the only VoIP tool out there. There are tons more I’ve yet to explore, for example, 5sim.net and many others. If I have the time, I’ll be trying the rest out and giving a review about it😼

However, I would like to make it clear: Please don’t use this for anything unethical or with malicious intent. I’m just sharing a really useful website that makes it easier to set up a Sock Puppet account for personal or research purposes.

That's all for today 👏
